Committee of Astronomy of the Polish Academy of Sciences – Meeting on January 31, 2025
On January 31, 2025, a meeting of the Committee of Astronomy of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) took place, during which several key decisions were made.
New IAU Members
The Committee recommended the admission of 10 new members to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), including 7 full members and 3 junior members.
Adopted Resolutions
Resolution No. 1/2025
The Committee of Astronomy of PAN requests an increase in the number of points assigned to the journal Nature Astronomy to 200 points, ensuring its appropriate ranking among scientific journals. The justification for this decision includes the journal’s high Impact Factor (13.3) and CiteScore (19.5), placing it among the leading international publications in the field of astronomy and astrophysics.
Resolution No. 2/2025
The Committee expressed disappointment with the decision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education to discontinue funding for the television program Astronarium in 2025. Since 2014, this program has been produced by the Polish Astronomical Society in collaboration with Polish Television and has played a crucial role in popularizing astronomy and satellite research in Poland. Astronarium not only provides valuable content on television but also effectively engages the online community through YouTube and social media. Considering the program’s importance for education and science promotion, the Committee has appealed for the continuation of its funding.
