The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is pleased to announce IAU Symposium 396: Massive Galaxies Across the Universe, scheduled for June 9–13, 2025, in Naples, Italy.

This symposium will address one of the most challenging questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology: the formation and evolution of the most massive galaxies in the Universe. These galaxies, with stellar masses exceeding 10¹¹ solar masses, hold more than half of the stellar mass in the local Universe. Observations of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshifts (z > 4) have challenged galaxy formation models, raising questions about their rapid growth, stellar metallicity, and efficient quenching mechanisms.
