The International Astronomical Union has established Commission C5: Cultural Astronomy
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has established a new commission — Commission C5: Cultural Astronomy.
Commission C5 serves as the IAU’s main point of reference for Cultural Astronomy — its connections with other branches of astronomy, research in the field, and public education about how astronomy has been and continues to be used in culture throughout world history. The commission was created to support any part of the IAU seeking such assistance and acts as a leading global organization for the development of all aspects of Cultural Astronomy — a term that has become an umbrella for archaeoastronomy (the astronomy of ancient cultures), ethnoastronomy (the astronomy of contemporary Indigenous cultures), and aspects of modern astronomy in culture, such as astronomy in literature, poetry, music, and film.
