The Kavli Foundation and the IAU: Advancing Global Scientific Cooperation
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has announced that The Kavli Foundation will provide USD 82,000 to continue its support for two major IAU initiatives: the Global Coordination Workshop 2026 and the Young Astronomers Lunch at the XXXIII IAU General Assembly in Rome in 2027.
The Kavli–IAU Global Coordination Workshop, titled “International Coordination of the Time-Domain and Multi-Messenger Sky: New Opportunities and New Challenges”, will take place on 22–26 June 2026 in Görlitz, Germany, hosted by the German Centre for Astrophysics (DZA). The invitation-only meeting will bring together around 50 leading astronomers and astrophysicists to address key challenges in coordinating global efforts in time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy.
The grant also supports the Young Astronomers Lunch, one of the most popular events at the IAU General Assembly, expected to welcome around 500 early-career researchers in Rome in August 2027, fostering mentorship, networking, and career development.
The IAU emphasises that The Kavli Foundation’s continued commitment plays a vital role in strengthening international collaboration and supporting the next generation of astronomers.
