The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has opened applications for the 2026 IAU-Shaw PhD Prize, recognising outstanding doctoral research achievements by early-career astronomers and astrophysicists worldwide.

The prize is awarded in each of the nine scientific Divisions of the IAU. An additional PhD Prize at Large may be awarded to a candidate who conducted their research under exceptionally challenging circumstances.

Each winner will receive a €1,000 monetary award, an official certificate, and the opportunity to present their research at the 33rd IAU General Assembly, taking place in Rome, Italy, on 10–19 August 2027. The IAU will cover the registration fee.

The competition is open to candidates who have successfully defended or will defend their PhD thesis between 16 December 2025 and 15 December 2026, provided their research falls within the scientific scope of one of the nine IAU Divisions.

Application deadline: 15 January 2027.

Applications must be submitted online through the official IAU submission system.

Further information about the prize, eligibility criteria and application procedure is available on the International Astronomical Union website.
